I am deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Reiss’s passing. I was privileged to have been in his Freshman English class during his first year of teaching at Saint Michael’s College. I was not a good student who surprised many by even reaching college yet Dr. Reiss and his class remains a pleasant memory of my four years at St. Mikes. He made the material interesting and he was genuinely concerned about his students. Dr. Reiss’ fine character was what made him the great teacher that he was – one that you just wanted to work hard for. I remember he once joked about the differences between his dream of teaching at a small New England College and reality – but it was all positive. I can only imagine what one of his classes must have been like late in his career if as his eulogist said, “He just kept getting better.” He left a lasting impression on me during our first year at St. Mikes.
