Walter Fitzmaurice, North Reading, MA, received the French Legion of Honor award on July 8 in Boston Harbor during the Tall Ships Festival for his service during World War II. This award is the highest honor to receive from the French Government.
1954
The Honorary James Starkey, Brooklyn,NY, made an eloquent and entertaining presentation of the Dorian Gray award to John Menard, during the Golden Knights dinner at Reunion’09. The Dorian Gray award was instituted by the Class of 1954 during their 35th reunion. The award honors the alumnus who “most retains the appearance he presented as an undergraduate.”

Anthony Agostinelli, Portsmouth, RI, reports that he will teach a course for the Circle of Scholars on world religion at Salve Regina College this fall. He is a retired university professor. He has facilitated Circle of Scholars’ seminars for many years and has previously presented seminars in the fields of natural law ethics, biblical themes and value, and jazz. He is looking for a publisher for his first mystery novel, The Professor Was Dead, and continues to host his cable access TV program, Jazz Bash.

Fabian Raab and his wife, Terry, Lessburg, FL, celebrated their 50th anniversary on January 10, on a cruise sponsored by the Leesburg, FL, Knights of Columbus. Fabian is the Grand Knight and Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Assembly. They have two daughters and six grandchildren.

John Perrault, Star Lake, NY, retired in June after 41 years of teaching in the same school, and same classroom, at the Clifton-Fine Central School in Star Lake, NY. Carl Roof Jr., Woodstock, VT, and his wife, Joyce, are finally making a long awaited trip to Italy. Their granddaughter, Mia, joined them for the summer.

Doreen Horton M’72 and husband, Bill Horton M’72, of North Attleboro, MA, have started a company, The Perfect Seating. The Perfect Seating manufacturers and distributes a system for couples to easily plan their wedding reception seating.

Sean Moran has two screenplays both in option: Mud Alley Midgets, a kid’s baseball dark comedy, and Hasbeen Hotel, a new octogenarian comedy. The plays are now being proofed for publication. He also has authored two plays that have been recently published: Stained Glass, a true story of a New England priest in trouble with the Church, and Immaculate Deception, a murder mystery in a convent.

Dr. Laura Meusel Glasz, Wallingford, CT, announced that her husband retired from the Army Reserves after 38 years of service, and that she is now a grandmother.

Navy Captain David Shiveley, Dunfries, VA, reported for duty as the Commanding Officer for Naval Hospital in Lemoore, CA. Shiveley’s previous duty stations included being senior medical officer aboard USS America, general medical officer at the Branch Medical Clinic, Naval Air Station in Miramar, CA, and the command surgeon for United States Transportation Command. His various medals include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. Hollie Shaner-McRae, Burlington, VT, Fletcher Allen’s Coordinator of Professional Nursing Practice has a national essay contest for nursing students named after her. The contest was created by two organizations, The Luminary Project and Health Care Without Harm, to honor Shaner-McRae for providing decades of leadership in environmentally sustainable nursing. The competition is designed to make students aware of the important role nurses play in reducing the environmental impact of health care delivery.

Maria Horton, Essex Junction, VT, was unanimously approved as the half-time interim assistant principal by the Charlotte Central School board. She served as the principal of St. Francis Xavier School in Winooski for six years.

1930
Rev. Michael A. DeMasi, North Bennington, VT, died May 19, 2009. He studied at Montreal’s Grand Seminary after Saint Michael’s and was ordained to the priesthood in 1943. He served parishes throughout Vermont, including in Rutland and the Northeast Kingdom before becoming pastor at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington, where he was until his mandatory retirement in 1993. However, he was shortly called back to be administrator of churches in East Dorset and Danby. Fr. DeMasi also was chaplain for the Bennington Knights of Columbus for many years, and for the past 16 years had been a visitor to the sick, poor and hungry, saying Mass at the Vermont Veterans Home and bringing the Eucharist to the homebound. The NorShaft Lions Club once named him its Citizen of the Year. He is survived by four sisters and extended family.
1941
Joseph E. Rousseau, Essex Center, VT, died July 10, 2009. He served during World War II with the Army Air Force Weather Surveillance Team and later earned advanced degrees from the University of Vermont, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Connecticut, where he was a chemistry professor for 28 years, specializing in nutritional science. Joseph was an avid fisherman, bird watcher and outdoorsmen. He is survived by his brother, Rev. Pete Rousseau ’45.
1950
Raymond L. Avenia, Windsor, CT, died July 7, 2009. An Army veteran of World War II, Ray served in Europe and was part of the Anzio invasion. After Saint Michael’s, he had a long teaching career in Torrington, CT, then for 20 years—until retirement—at Hartford Public High School as a math teacher. After retirement, Ray worked part-time as a realtor. He was active in his parish, belonged to the Knights of Columbus and American Legion and attended many reunions of his former battalion. He enjoyed gardening, travel, cooking, reading history, following University of Connecticut basketball and keeping time and score for Hartford Public’s basketball team. His wife of 56 years, Evelina, predeceased him. Ray, an alumnus of the Year in 1985, is survived by three sons, including Phil Avenia ’73, two daughters, two sisters and extended family.
Gerald F. Sussillo, New York, NY, died July 11, 2009. An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he was retired as a longtime history teacher in New York City, and also had been the absentee and military ballot recorder for the New York City Board of Election, serving too for a time as commissioner of deeds. A member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW and Elks, Jerry enjoyed organizing military reunions and was active in his parish. He is survived by a brother and extended family.

Andrew L. Scheer, Chappaqua, NY, died June 12, 2009. An accounting major who played baseball and football at Saint Michael’s, Andrew worked for many years as deputy receiver of taxes for the Town of New Castle. He was a life member of the Chappaqua Volunteer Fire Department where he held numerous positions. He also was active in his church, ushering for 50 years. Andrew is survived by his wife, Dolores, two sons and extended family.

John T. Welch, Portland, ME, died May 17, 2009 from Multiple Systems Atrophy, a rare form of Parkinson’s. After Army service in the Korean War, Jack worked for State Street Bank in Boston before moving to Maine, where he began a 30-year career with the IRS as a revenue agent. He volunteered for the Independent Transportation Network, Money Minders of the Southern Maine Agency for the Aging and the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen. He was also a volunteer visitor to the Springbrook Nursing Home and St. Joseph’s Manor. John is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carole, two sons, two sisters and extended family.
1960
William D. McMahon, Los Gatos, CA, died February 3, 2008, the college learned recently. Bill flew B-52s and FB-11s during his 21 years in the Air Force under the Strategic Air Command, and he was awarded many medals and citations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters. After retiring as a lieutenant colonel, he worked at Lockheed for 12 years in California, then was a substitute teacher. He had a special affection for animals and enjoyed bicycling and watching sports. He was survived by his wife, Karen, who died in April 2009, and by two sons, four stepchildren, two brothers, a sister and extended family.
The college recently learned of the death of George D. Milliot, Palm Harbor, FL, on July 19, 1992. He moved to Florida from his native West Hartford, CT, where he had been a computer analyst for the Connecticut Health Department. George also once owned a motel on Cape Cod. At his death he was survived by his wife, Ana, two sons, two daughters, three brothers, four sisters and extended family.
1968
Edward E. Newman, Stow, MA, died July 17, 2009 of brain cancer. After receiving his Saint Michael’s mathematics degree he earned an MBA from Babson College in Wellesley, MA in 1988. Ed was in sales with IBM for over 40 years and worked with the firm’s Odyssey of the Mind program in public schools, He and his family moved to Stow in 1976, where he became active in town government there, serving as town moderator from 1995–2009 and working with finance, education and groundwater advisory panels. He was long affiliated with the Massachusetts Moderators Association and was to have been the group’s president this past year until he became ill. He helped create an educational DVD on Town Meetings that is used widely across Massachusetts. Ed and Jody were the glue that kept classmates from 1967–69 together with annual gatherings at their home for more than 35 years. Ed is survived by his wife, Jody, three daughters, a son, a brother, two sisters and extended family.
Richard M. Ossa, Heidelberg, Germany, died March 19, 2009. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Richard attended Saint Michael’s for three years before transferring to Iona College. He worked for the State of New York as a social worker and also worked a few years as a wedding and portrait photographer before traveling and settling in Heidleburg in 1989 with his partner, Sibylle, who survives, as does Richard’s sister, Sylvia.

Barry F. Driscoll, Barre Town, VT, died June 29, 2009. After receiving his political science degree from Saint Michael’s, Barry earned a master’s in urban studies from South Connecticut State University. He and his wife, Adrianne, moved to Barre Town in 1980. At the time of his death he worked as senior policy analyst with the Vermont Department of Transportation. He was a member of the American Planning Association and Amateur Radio Relay League, and enjoyed reading, golf and the Red Sox. Barry is survived by his wife, two sisters and extended family.
1982
Susan M. Gifford, Corvallis, OR, died July 25, 2009. After Saint Michael’s she earned a religious studies master’s at Mundelein College in Chicago. Susan devoted her career to Catholic campus ministry at the University of Illinois and Oregon State University, where she was director of campus ministry at the time of her death. She held positions on various archdiocesan and national committees associated with Newman Centers and the Catholic Campus Ministry Association. As a Saint Michael’s student she was extremely active in Campus Ministry and credited her Edmundite mentors with inspiring her own ministry. She enjoyed cooking and reading.
Susan is survived by her parents, Rolland ’51 and Lois Gifford, and a brother, Paul.

Chris Hayes, North Pomfret, VT, died June 6 of prostate cancer. He earned an undergraduate degree from Ohio’s Oberlin College in 1973. From 1981 to 1992 he was program director at the Painted Bridge Art Center in Philadelphia and a leader in that city’s performance-art and experimental theater scene, staging many productions with activist political and social agendas. Moving to Vermont in 1992, he taught drama to elementary school children in East Corinth, was active with Bread and Puppet Theater and organized projects with artistic, cultural or historical themes. He is survived by his wife, Holly, a son, a daughter, his mother and two sisters.
