Bill Gilmartin, Teaticket, MA, reports that during the winter months, he and his wife, Ruth, have been volunteering at the Immokalee Friendship House in Immokalee, FL, for more than seven years. This year they devoted 100 hours of service to the La Casa thrift store, next door to the shelter, where Bill and Ruth help migrant farm workers and their families obtain clothing and other household items.

Anthony Agostinelli, Portsmouth, RI, is a jazz historian, producer and retired university professor. He currently produces the Peggy Award-winning TV program JazzBash on Cox Cable. He is also preparing his collection of recordings and jazz memorabilia, which has taken close to 60 years to amass, to be given over by his estate to the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Arthur Lavallee lives in The Villages, FL, where he stays active in softball, water volleyball, tennis, bike riding, dancing, pickleball, golf and table tennis.

Fran Pinard, Barre, VT, received a 2008 Vermont Coaching Achievement Award from the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. When reflecting on his career, which spans more than 40 years of coaching and teaching, Fran was hailed as being “one of the most successful Vermont high school basketball coaches.” Fran and another coaching achievement award recipient were recognized for having “gone above and beyond in their coaching careers, trying to ensure they help shape positive minds of scores of athletes, not only on the field or court, but in schools and in community.”

Jim Pawlowski, Houston, TX, retired in 2003 after 38 years with the NASA Johnson Space Center. He now enjoys spending time with his wife, Mary Lou, and their children and grandchildren. Edward J. Creem Jr., Middletown, CT, retired in June 2007 as a senior dispatcher and E-911 administrator for the Cromwell Police Department. Judge Bob Jacon, Melrose, NY, established a mental health court connections program for Rensselaer County, NY. He has been the county’s court judge since 2005, and before that, a private practitioner for 31 years. In 2002, Bob retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Air Force Reserve.

Dr. Leo Shea III, New York, NY, was cited in an article on Lyme disease in the New England Psychologist. An expert in the study of the disease, Leo is chairman emeritus of the National Research Fund for Tick-Borne Diseases, Inc. E. Joseph Lee, Windham, ME, was appointed the 13th president of Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, ME. The college has a full-time enrollment of 1,075 students.

Col. William M. Gladski, Beavercreek, OH, retired in April 2008 after more than 40 years of service to the U.S. Government. Rich Feeley and his wife, Terri Feeley M’81, are semi-retired, living in Ocala, FL, and Colchester, VT. They continue to own Coburn & Feeley Property Management in Burlington, VT, and are real estate investors in Vermont and Florida. They are proud grandparents of two girls, Mollie Shea Feeley, 9, and Summer Caroline Feeley, 6.

While he was unable to attend his 40th reunion this year at Saint Michael’s, he says he will be there for the 45th gathering. Edward W.J. FitzGerald Jr., Berea, KY, was recognized as a “teacher who made a difference” by the University of Kentucky Student Center. Over the years, Edward has taught at Krirk College and Thammasart University in Thailand, and was the international student advisor at Berea College in Kentucky for 22 years.

Richard Jakubowski M’70, Scotland, CT, is retired after a 35-year career as a high school administrator and English teacher at the Windham High School in Connecticut. Peter Pesenti, Fairfax Station, VA, completed his Ph.D. in environmental microbiology at George Mason University. During his professional career, Peter has spent 23 years in the US Air Force, and has also worked as a research scientist for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, fulfilling assignments for the Department of Defense, Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security. Peter has since transitioned into the federal service sector and is now the program manager for the bioforensics research program within the Science and Technology Directorate at the Department of Homeland Security. Peter and his wife, Beth, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in May. “We are now looking forward to catching up on travel and visiting with our adult children,” he writes.

Owen is serving in Baghdad, Iraq, as a Future Operations Plans Officer in the Multi-national Corps – Iraq, serving on the Civil-Military Operations staff. The city of London, England was a meeting place for Julie Colby MacBride of Kill, County Kildare, Ireland, and Jackie Kirby Keady of Longmeadow, MA. The two met up in April during Jackie’s visit with her daughter, Caroline, a junior at UMass-Amherst, who spent the spring semester abroad. “Jackie and ‘Colbs’ visited Big Ben and the Tower of London, shopped at Harrod’s, took a river boat on the Thames and flirted with many a Beefeater,” they write. “We send along cheers to Saint Michael’s and to our 30-year friendship!”

Dr. Richard Visser was presented with a commendatory resolution in his honor by Councilwoman Jan Perry of the Los Angeles, CA, City Council for his contributions to the study of childhood obesity. He is the first individual in this particular field to be recognized by the council which, over time, has bestowed commendatory resolutions to Donald Trump, Bruce Willis, Halle Berry, and Matt Damon for their contributions to the city. Daniel Roke has been finishing up his time in the US Air Force and has been serving as the chief, department of anesthesia, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. He will relocate to Nashville, TN, in October with his wife, Suzanne, and his daughter, Emma, where he will work as a pediatric anesthesiologist at Vanderbilt University’s children’s hospital.

Graduates from the Saint Michael’s class of 1994 met up at Mangy Moose at Jackson Hole Resort in Wyoming in March 2008. At the Beverly, MA, city clerk’s office in February, two reporters from competing newspapers found out they had much more in common with each other than awaiting presidential primary results. As Bobby Gates ’00 and Cate Lecuyer ’04 struck up conversation to bide time, they discovered that they had previously worked for the same boss while at different Vermont newspapers. Recounting their college years, they learned they had also both attended Saint Michael’s, though they never knew each another on campus because Cate started the fall after Bobby had graduated. It’s a small world! Bobby says. “Here we are in the North Shore, three hours away from Saint Michael’s. We’re killing time and we stumbled upon several shared experiences, yet we were never at the same place at the same time.”

Ed Burke, Colchester, VT, is a part of Burlington’s Awareness Theater Company, a group of actors who travel around providing education and light entertainment surrounding the skills and issues of individuals with disabilities. In May, the company teamed up with Back to Back Theatre, a troupe of actors with intellectual disabilities from Australia, for a workshop. An active marathoner, Craig ran the 26.2 mile Walt Disney World marathon in January and he ran in the 2008 Boston Marathon in April. Dave O’Connor works in the Washington DC office for Sen. Patrick Leahy ’61. Dave is the legislative correspondent covering foreign operations, defense and trade issues. Jonah Kessel, South Lake Tahoe, CA, is the visual director at the Tahoe Daily Tribune. A series of his photographs have garnered much attention. The photo “A Mother’s Tears,” which depicted the returning of a coffin of a soldier killed in Iraq, became an AP photo that was run in newspapers around the world. Jonah also won first place in a National Press Photograph’s Association Region 10 contest for his photo essay, “The Will to Live: Disfigured, but unbroken.” The essay documented the life of a woman who underwent amputations to her upper body from a bacterial infection. Mike Lefebvre, Somerville, MA, is a reinsurance analyst at Liberty Mutual in Boston, MA. Brendan McGonigle, Byfield, MA, is taking on a remarkable endeavor, bicycling about 5,000 miles from Boston to Los Angeles to raise funds and awareness for the National Center for Family Homelessness. His thesis focused on “Artistry and Characters: Willa Lather.” Rene is in the process of writing a book on “The Way We Were,” which is about French Canadian culture and language in Northern Rhode Island and Environs: 1900-1950.

David Cobb, Lyndonville, VT, was elected to the board of directors for the National Association of Elementary School Principals. He will serve as director of Zone 1, representing elementary and middle school principals for all of New England and Delaware. David is the principal of the Lyndon Town School in Lyndonville, VT.

Brian DuBoff, Saint Clair Shores, MD is the director of Maryland’s southern region Small Business Development Center, which is hosted by the College of Southern Maryland.

Dorothy Barewicz M’03, South Burlington, VT, was named a Catechetical Scholar by the National Catholic Educational Association. She will spend two years participating in a scholars program working on a research project that focuses on the social and cultural challenges affecting religious instruction. Her work will be mentioned in the Catechetical Scholars IV resource book, to be published by the National Catholic Educational Association. Dorothy is currently the director of the Office of Catholic Formation of the Diocese of Burlington.

William Talbott, North Ferrisburg, VT, was appointed acting commissioner of education by the Vermont State Board of Education. He will also continue on in his current role as chief financial officer and deputy commissioner to the Vermont Department of Education.

Randi Hacker, Lawrence, KS, is the creator and writer of the radio series “Postcards from Asia,” which is broadcast weekly on Kansas Public Radio. She writes that she is working on her second novel and is busy raising her 12-year-old daughter adopted from China.
