Bill Gilmartin sent in a clipping from his hometown paper, the Naples Daily News, which featured a Saint Michael’s service trip to Immokalee, FL, over winter break. A group of students and staff had volunteered at many places around Naples, including at the Immokalee Friendship House, a homeless shelter where Bill and his wife, Ruth, also volunteer.

Alphonse Potenza, Tustin, CA, is president of the Armed Forces Retirees Association of California and was responsible for directing a substantial gift to the Saint Michael’s Military Heritage program honoring the college’s veterans. Bishop Moses Anderson, SSE M’61, Dearborn, MI was featured in a newspaper story about the civil rights movement in Elizabeth City, NC, where had served as the pastor of St. Catherine’s in the 1960s. Additionally, in May Bishop Anderson celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest.

Alfred Scaia, Southbury, CT, has taken on a valuable role as a videographer. What began as a family project in Readsboro, VT, in the 1990s with videotaping his neighbors talking about the Austrian/Italian heritage that they all share, has turned into something meaningful for his town. He has since recorded the stories of several senior citizens in Readsboro, along with recording the parish history of two local Catholic churches. In 2004, Al received a League of Local Historical Societies Lifetime Achievement Award from the Vermont History Society for his work. Jack Stebbins, Boca Raton, FL, ventured on a 645-mile bicycle trip though the Southern Alps of New Zealand. It was “indeed the toughest bicycle ride I’ve ever done,” he writes. Trip highlights included climbs over Mt. Hercules, descents though the rain forest, a visit to a former gold mining town, and rides through gorges and to a glacier. “We climbed the Crown Range to get to Queenstown and I thought my heart was going to explode since the route was long and steep. I think I’m getting too old to do this! But, at the top, it was worth it,” he recalls. “We left the mountains and biked through the New Zealand ‘desert’ and then on to the lush green terrain and stayed overnight at a working sheep farm. New Zealand has more sheep than people. Our hostess baked the famous dessert, pavlova. Yum! No worries, on a trip like this I can consume 4,000 calories a day and not gain a pound.”

Covering Florida politics, John Kennedy is the Tallahassee bureau chief for the Orlando Sentinel. He has been a reporter in Florida for 23 years, and is married with two daughters, ages 13 and 11. John Hahn, Glen Rock, NJ, wrote in to say that he, along with Dave King, Shelburne, VT, and Ron Roy, Dallas, TX, ventured to Sacramento, CA, for the California International Marathon in December to see their friend, Dr. Pat Vaughan, run his first marathon. “Pat ran a 3:52 marathon - pretty good for a first effort. But then, Pat is a doer and a go get’m kind of guy,” John writes.

Barry spent six years researching and writing the book, which focuses on the financial contrasts between Wall Street and the American consumer, and documents how life insurance can be the ideal place to invest one’s savings.

The Marine Corps Times reported that Brigadier General Joseph Dunford, Alexandria, VA, is slated for a highly commendable promotion to the rank of lieutenant general in an exceptional move that would take him from a one-star to a three-star ranking. President Bush nominated him to replace Lt. Gen. Richard Natonski for a position that would have Joe serving as deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations. It is also a position that would qualify him as a candidate to be the next commandant in the Marines.

Grasso, Jr., Stratford, CT, donated 22 acres of land to the Town of Westport to serve as an open community space with walking trails that will feature educational information on indigenous flora and fauna. Ralph is the owner of A.R.S. Partners, a company of custom home builders and real estate developers. Last fall, Catherine Doherty, Norwich, VT, directed a theater production of Doubt at Northern Stage in White River Junction, VT. Doubt received a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize when it ran on Broadway.

Bishop Michael W. Warfel was appointed Bishop of Great Falls-Billings in Montana, by Pope Benedict XVI. Bishop Warfel previously served as Bishop of the Diocese of Juneau in Alaska. In his new appointment, Bishop Warfel will oversee a diocese of 51,000 Catholics in 66 parishes and 44 missions. Rose B. In Memoriam
1928
Dr. Arthur B. DeGrandpre, Plattsburgh, NY, died January 20, 2008. He was the oldest known living alumni of Saint Michael’s at the time of his death. He was educated by some of the original Edmundite founders and eventual presidents of the college, including Father Edmund Total, Father Eugene Alliot and Father William Jeanmarie. Arthur entered Saint Michael’s in 1924 at age 15. He transferred to Georgetown University to finish undergraduate studies and later received his medical degree there in 1932. He volunteered for military service in 1942 and served as surgical team chief before his 1945 discharge as a major. Arthur practiced general surgery in Plattsburgh for 56 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons since 1942, past chief of staff of CVPH Medical Center, past president of the Clinton County Medical Society, a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, a Rotarian honored with the Harris Fellowship Award, a monthly contributor to the Plattsburgh Press-Republican and author of three books. Plattsburgh named a street after him, and the Diocese of Ogdensburg honored him for distinguished service. His wife of 57 years, Jeanie, died in 1994. He is survived by four sons, four daughters and extended family.

Eugene H. Donahue, North Providence, RI, died December 23, 2007. A college biology professor for many years, he spent most of his career at Providence College. After Saint Michael’s he entered the US. Air Force and was stationed at bases in the U.S. and in England. He later achieved a master’s from Notre Dame and doctorate from St. Bonaventure. He was active with the Boy Scouts, Audubon Society, North Providence Library Board of Directors and his Providence parish. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eleanor, two sons, two daughters, a sister and extended family.

Richard T. Welch, Merrimack, NH, died December 7, 2007. He entered the service in World War II while attending Saint Michael’s, then returned to complete his degree. He was in the Army Black Emblem Panther 66th Division, serving in France from December 1944 until the war’s end and was discharged in 1946. He met his wife, Margaret, at a Saint Michael’s social when she was a Fannie Allen Nursing School student. Dick taught private-school science and math and coached sports, then moved to West Rutland, VT, where he was a salesman for DuBois Chemicals and was active in his West Rutland community and church. In 1974 he was transferred to Colorado as regional manager for DuBois, retiring in 1985. In 2002 he moved to New Hampshire and took up playing the keyboard, volunteering at a nursing home and hospitals. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret, two sons, two daughters, a sister and extended family.
1948
Paul H. Guare, Montpelier, VT, died January 12, 2008. A lifelong Montpelier resident, he served his country, state and hometown as a soldier, journalist, businessman, high-level state official, judge, historian and all-around civic activist. His Saint Michael’s education was interrupted by World War II, and Paul served in the 16th Armored Division of General Patton’s 3rd Army. After completing his English degree, he worked in newspapers and radio around Montpelier, then joined the administration of Vermont Governor Phil Hoff, filling high-level posts in economic planning, transportation and federal-program oversight. He was elected assistant judge for Washington County in 1986 and later served terms for Superior and Family Courts until mandatory retirement at 72. Vermont Governor Jim Douglas then appointed him to the Vermont Rail Council, where he served until his death. For his work with Montpelier’s Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Knights of Columbus and historic preservation, he often was called “Mr. Montpelier.” Active in Vermont’s Democratic Party most of his life, Paul also loved theater and took part in many shows, amateur and professional. He also loved Irish music and opera, Shakespeare and travel. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Claire, a daughter, a sister and extended family.
Brother Jim W. Madigan, CSC, Easton, MA, died November 11, 2007. His studies at Saint Michael’s were interrupted by his World Ward II service in the Army Infantry. After finishing at Saint Michael’s with a business degree, he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1950 and made first profession of vows as a religious brother in 1951 with final vows in 1954. From 1952-1967 he was treasurer and director of maintenance for the Congregation’s Provincial Administration in Bridgeport, CT. Brother Jim served until his death at Stonehill College as business manager, director of buildings and grounds and cemetery administrator. He also served at the Holy Cross Residence in North Dartmouth, MA in the early 1970s, and since 1980 had been bookkeeper and pastoral assistant at Holy Cross Parish in South Easton. He is survived by extended family.

Edward J. O’Day, Hydesville, VT, died October 14, 2007. He served in the Army Eighth Air Force in England from 1943 to 1945 and had worked as a sales engineer and sales manager for General Electric. Ed enjoyed golf and church volunteer work, and attended his class reunion in 1999 to celebrate becoming a Golden Knight. His wife, Kathleen, died in 2006.

John A. Droney, Jr., Hartford, CT, died December 16, 2007. In 1957, Jack co-founded Conn Acoustics Inc in Newington, CT, where he worked until his retirement. He was a longtime member of Avon Country Club and a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the USS Frybarger from 1943-1946. John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, two sons, a daughter and extended family. Peter Y. Flanagan, White River Junction, VT, died December 9, 2007. Named the college’s Alumni of the Year during his 50th class reunion in 2000, Peter was also a former associate trustee. He served in the U.S. Navy, 1945-1946 and was co-owner of Hartford Motors Chrysler/Plymouth International Harvester dealership. He was active in his local parish and served the Burlington Diocese finance committee for many years. Peter had belonged to the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Elks and Lions. He also served the Hartford Board of Civil Authority, State Board of Victim’s Compensation, and was an early supporter of the Upper Valley Haven where he volunteered for many years. After his 1990 retirement, he and his wife, Mary Ellen, volunteered for the Edmundite Mission in Selma, AL, and the Christian Appalachia Project in eastern Kentucky. He is survived by his wife, four sons, three daughters, a brother and extended family. Four of Peter’s children and his brother also are alumni.

Daniel F. Tarpey, Milton, MA, died February 1, 2008. A Navy veteran of World War II and a Saint Michael’s Alumnus of the Year in 1971, Dan for many years was a teacher and swimming coach at Boston English High School. He was a former owner of the Irish Cottage Stores and had been owner of Celtic Monument Company. He was inducted into the Halls of Fame for Boston English High School, the Yawkey Baseball League, the Massachusetts Swim Coaches and the Milton Kiwanis. He also was active in the American Legion, the Irish American Veterans and the Donegal Club. Dan was predeceased by his wife, Mary; and a daughter; he is survived by five sons, a brother, a sister and extended family.

Herbert H. Fuller, Jr., Westfield, MA, died December 11, 2007. He attended Western New England Law School after Saint Michael’s and worked as claims insurance manager for Insurance Company of North America, retiring in 1983. Herbert was a corporal in the First Marine Air Wing Unit during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, a daughter and extended family. Robert S. Murphy, Severn, MD, died January 1, 2008. A native of Malden, MA, he served in the Army with the military police. He was a mid-Atlantic regional manager with S.C. Johnson and Sons. Robert was active in his local parish and a “friend of Bill W.” His wife, Dianna, died in 1997; a son and daughter also predeceased him. He is survived by two sons, a daughter, a sister and extended family.

John H. Carroll, Limerick, ME, died December 28, 2007. A retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, John was commandant of cadets and a distinguished military graduate. He completed 22 years in the Air Force as a career officer and was a navigator/bombardier in B47s and B52s in Strategic Air Command, flying numerous 24-hour airborne alert missions during the Cold War and serving in Vietnam. In 1976 he retired and joined his father at J.P. Carroll Fuel Co. in Limerick, where he expanded the business for the next 32 year, eventually being joined by five of his children. He had served as chairman Maine Oil Dealers Association and was active in politics, community and business development in Limerick. A 32-year American Legion member, he also served as Maine Democratic Party committee treasurer and with Maine’s Finance Authority and Lottery Commission.He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dolores; two sons, four daughters, his mother, two brothers and extended family. Joseph T. Lewis, Jr., Boston, MA, died November 13, 2007. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut for over 30 years. He is survived by a sister and extended family. Donald J. Reese, Staten Island, NY, died December 25, 2007. He went on from the Saint Michael’s ROTC program to become an Air Force captain, and was stationed in England as a transportation officer. He continued his education at the University of Paris and traveled extensively in Europe until his honorable discharge in 1964. Don worked for the State Insurance Fund and later the Sherman Insurance Service, becoming its proprietor and moving the business from Brooklyn to Staten Island. He taught literacy to prisoners for seven years, and also was co-founder of the Crossroads Foundation. After his 1992 retirement, Don was a part-time insurance consultant and increased his volunteer activism for Crossroads, receiving a citation from Pope John Paul II for his work. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Anne, two sons and extended family.

Clement F. Dubie, Essex Junction, VT, died October 23, 2007. A native of Burlington, he started his work career with Metropolitan Life Insurance, then served in the Vermont National Guard more than 32 years, attaining the rank of colonel with service in the Army Guard Medical Corps, as Air Guard base commander and finally as director of personnel of the Air and Army Guard at state headquarters. After his Guard career, Clem worked at Maynard’s Auto Supply. He was past president of the Fanny Allen Hospital Association, the Vermont State Recreation Board, the Essex Junction Recreation Board and the Vermont Motor Vehicle Arbitration Board. He also was a past president and charter member of the Shamrock Hunting Club and belonged to American Legion Post 91. His wife of 47 years, Janice, died in 2002. He is survived by four sons, two daughters, three sisters and extended family.

Rev. Raymond A. Giroux, Bomoseen, VT, died December 14, 2007. After his Saint Michael’s studies, he attended St. John’s Seminary, Boston, Fordham University in New York City and the Grand Seminary in Montreal, with ordination in 1963 He also attended the University of Vermont, McGill and Creighton Universities. In his priestly career with the Burlington diocese, Fr. Giroux served parishes in Essex Center, Rutland, Barre, Fairfax, St. Albans, South Burlington, and West Rutland. He also was principal of Marian High School, Barre, in the late 1960s and taught at Rice Memorial High School. He attained senior priest status in 2001. Fr. Giroux had many responsibilities with diocesan offices, particularly those dealing with church law, publishing, alcohol issues and housing. He is survived by extended family. Richard F. Spreer, Voorheesville, NY, died January 2, 2008. After Army service from 1957-59, he had a long career as a hospital administrator in New York State: assistant at Cornwall Hospital for 13 years, then administrator at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany and Ellenville Hospital, each for 11 years. He was a business program advisory board member at College of St. Rose, an education instructor at RPI and SUNY Albany, and vice-chairman of the Hudson Valley Auto Club. Richard was predeceased by his daughter He is survived by his wife, Mary, three daughters and two brothers.

Rev. Daniel J. O’Hear, Lanesborough, MA, died January 11, 2008. A Springfield, Mass, native, he was a popular pastor at St. Anthony of Padua Church in North Adams, MA, from 1979 until his retirement in 2005. After Saint Michael’s, Fr. O’Hear graduated from St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA and was ordained in Springfield in 1962. He served pastoral assignments in Ware, Holyoke, West Springfield and Pittsfield, and was assigned to the faculty of Springfield’s Cathedral High School before taking on the St. Anthony pastorate. After retirement, he moved to North American Martyrs Rectory in Lanesborough and was a hospital and hospice volunteer chaplain in the area. Fr. O”Hear was a Massachusetts Army National Guard chaplain for 25 years, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He enjoyed world travel and led several church tours. He is survived by a brother and extended family.

Austin W. Burke, Braintree, MA, died December 28, 2007. Born and raised in Clinton, MA, he was a retired partner of Burke Distributing in Randolph, MA. He loved history, collecting antiques and spending summers on Lake Champlain. He is survived by his wife, Judith, a son, two daughters, a brother, a sister and extended family.

Lynn D. Hebert, Wallingford, VT, died December 26, 2007, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He spent a year in the Society of St. Edmund Seminary after his college graduation before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served two years. Lynn worked a year at General Electric before starting a long career as an educator in New York and Vermont. Most recently he taught at Castleton State College, the College of St. Joseph and the Community College of Vermont. Lynn enjoyed music, writing, photography and nature. He is survived by a brother, a sister and extended family. Daniel J. McNamara, Burlington, VT, died January 4, 2005, the college learned recently. He taught driver’s education, social studies and history at Winooski and Mount Mansfield High Schools and was owner/operator of Mac’s Driving School. Dan was active in his Burlington parish and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and extended family.

Roger E. Harrington, Lakewood, CO, died December 31, 2007 of pancreatic cancer. After receiving his economics degree at Saint Michael’s, where he also participated in ROTC, Roger worked with K-Mart in Texas and Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Patti, two children, a brother, a sister and extended family.

John J. Hadley, Arlington, VT, died October 23, 2007. He was a human resources executive, working in his early career at Yale New Haven Hospital, then for Nyack, NY, Hospital and later retiring from Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown, NY. He loved skiing, kayaking, hiking and cycling, and supported the Appalachian Mountain Club. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, a daughter, Jeannine Jones ’97, and extended family. John W. Ksieniewicz, Sunderland, MA, died January 14, 2008 of cancer. A Northampton, MA, native, he earned a master’s at Springfield College after Saint Michael’s and taught high school English, in Pittsfield, MA, briefly and then in Northampton until his 2002 retirement. “Chick” was a longtime member of the National Education Association and Massachusetts Teachers Association. He is survived by his wife, Judith; his mother, two daughters, Kristin Joyce ’89 and Amy Orsini ’91, a twin brother and extended family.

David L. Carillo, Windsor Locks, CT, died November 22, 2007. In1971 he joined his father in the Charles S. Carillo Insurance Agency and was president of the agency until recently. He also served a six-year stint in the Vermont National Guard as a medic, and had served in the U.S. Army Reserve. David was a past president of the Windsor Locks Chamber of Commerce and active in community service clubs and in his church. He is survived by two sons, a brother, his former wife and extended family.

Robert J. McHugh, Dudley, MA, died January 12, 2008. He worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Revenue-Child Support division and belonged to the state service workers Union 509. He enjoyed politics, the beach, silent movies, Bob Dylan music and Notre Dame sports. Robert is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jean, three sons, a brother, a sister and extended family.

Gretchen Stephan, Atlanta, GA, died October 18, 2007. Gretchen earned an education master’s at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, and had worked as a teacher and curriculum specialist in the Rochester area for many years. She is survived by her parents, her brother, three sisters and extended family.

Tyler W. Bush, West Hartford, CT, died unexpectedly December 22, 2007. A first-year student at Saint Michael’s, he had attended West Hartford public schools and graduated from Saint Thomas More school in Oakdale, CT, in 2006. He was a fine athlete with special interest and ability in skiing, golf, soccer and football, but his real passion was lacrosse. He was a key member of championship football and lacrosse teams at St. Thomas More and an all-league lacrosse defenseman. Tyler is survived by his parents, a sister, his grandmothers and extended family.

Sister Madelaine Rivard (Sr. Madeleine de l’Euchariste, PM), Manchester, NH, died September 20, 2007. She entered the Order of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary at St. Hyacinthe, Canada, in 1932 and made her final profession in 1939. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Rivier College in Nashua, NH, before completing her Saint Michael’s master’s in theology. Sr. Rivard taught elementary school and was a high school principal at Catholic schools in the Manchester diocese through her career. She also coordinated parish religious education programs and worked in Rivier’s library since 1979. She is survived by extended family.

Rev. John A. Guischard, Rutland, VT, died May 15, 2007. Fr. Guischard was born in Philadelphia and served in several Vermont parishes before retiring from active ministry in 1991. Further information on survivors was not available.

Sister Joan Blanch, CSJ, Latham, NY, died December 29, 2007. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 50 years. An upstate New York native, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy, NY, after high school and professed final vows in 1965. She received a bachelor’s in education from the College of Saint Rose before earning her master’s in theology from Saint Michael’s. She was a first-grade teacher, religious educator and parish minister in New York and Michigan. She is survived by two sisters, two brothers and extended family.

Michael J. Ryan, San Francisco, CA, died October 19, 2007. A Barre, VT, native, he graduated from Spaulding High School and Champlain College before receiving his master’s at Saint Michael’s. He had worked at IDX in Burlington, Prentice Property Management in Oakland, CA, and Wells Fargo Financial Services in San Francisco. He was active as a volunteer writing grants for AIDS research. He is survived by his father and step-mother, a brother, a sister, step-brothers, step-sisters and extended family.
Staff
Joseph T. Popecki, Burlington, VT, died January 14, 2008. He was the college’s librarian for three decades beginning in 1967, followed by a period as archivist during semi-retirement. Born in Michigan, Joseph was a librarian at Catholic University for several years after completing his graduate study there in library science. He moved his family to Burlington in 1967 when he became Saint Michael’s librarian. Shortly after arriving, he oversaw the transition from the existing small, barracks-style library facility to a new one with a distinctive circular architecture that is the core of the present building. He also introduced a modern computer card catalog system. Joseph had a long career as an active volunteer in Vermont historical preservation, local transportation issues, Elderhostel programs, local politics and senior-citizen advocacy. He also was deeply involved in the startup and development of Burlington College. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jeanne; three sons, a daughter and extended family.
